Background

If you’re into exclusives, San Diego Comic Con always has enough to satisfy your needs.  Max Toy Company premiered a number of their new products, and also had a few SDCC exclusives for purchase.  One of those exclusives was a polka-dot version of Bwana Spoons’ Edward the Gator.

The original Edward the Gator had been released several months ago.  In addition to the regular and SDCC versions, Max Toy has created a few variants – all Red, all White, Glow and the Bloodbath Double Punch Exclusive.

The story behind the character is that Edward is the founder and president of the Forest Island Lepidoptera Society.  He was nearly blinded by the sun as a young alligator pup, which led to his ultra enhanced sense of color.  (Lepidoptera is an order of Insects that includes butterflies and moths)

Packaging

Bwana Spoons uses a ton of bright, vibrant colors in his artwork, and this artwork covers the Edward the Gator packaging.  It’s possibly one of the most artistically created boxes out there.  And who doesn’t like seeing a tray type of plastic packaging…minus those pesky twist ties.

The Figure

The Edward the Gator soft vinyl figure is approximately 5 ½” in height
and has 6 points of articulation (arms, legs, neck and tail).  His
accessories include a butterfly net, which fits neatly in his right
hand, and a butterfly bag (or maybe a man-purse), which you can open,
that hangs to Edward’s left side.  The orange and yellow polka-dot
outfit that Edward wears has the Forest Island Lepidoptera Society name
and logo emblazoned across the back.

Our Opinion

Mark Nagata
and Bwana Spoons have teamed up to bring Spoons’ trippy
artwork and characters to life.  It’s a different path for Max Toy
Company, which has primarily been known for producing high-quality
Kaiju vinyl figures.

While the original Edward the Gator figure was more along the line of
what a butterfly collecting Alligator in a raincoat would look like,
the San Diego Comic Con Exclusive features a nice polka dot pattern
with a blue skinned alligator.  I’m a fan of the blue and white color
scheme of the exclusive, since it has a “cooler” look to it.  I would
like to see what a pair of orange shades with white lenses would have
looked…keeping with the polka-dot theme.
